Dalmatian
History and Origin
The Dalmatian is one of the oldest breeds and there is not accurate information about its descent. This breed was called after Dalmatia, a region of Croatia located along the Adriatic Sea. Dalmatians dogs can be found on the paintings of Italian painters dated back to the year 1710. Some believe that the breed was known much earlier. The pictures of similar spotted dogs were found in the tombs of ancient Pharaohs. Dalmatians were imported into England in the 18th century and became extremely popular as coach dogs. They run ahead the coaches of noblemen. Dalmatians also served as hounds. They also helped firemen clearing out the way for their carriage and were their loyal companions and watchdogs. Today the Dalmatian is the official mascot of the fire service in some countries.
The first breed standard was adopted in 1890.
Appearance
The Dalmatian is a distinctively spotted dog of muscular medium-sized body. The height is between 19 and 23 inches.
The coat is short, dense and close fitting.
Personality
Dalmatians are playful, outgoing and friendly. They are energetic, possess considerable stamina, very agile. These dogs were bred to run and need a good deal of exercise to feel well.
